Bramble Bottom Cottage, Muker, Yorkshire Dales

Sleeps 10, Bedrooms 5, Bathrooms 4, Price From £1195

Welcome to Bramble Bottom, a stunning large luxury holiday cottage set in the honey-pot village of Muker in Swaledale. A dream for walkers, cyclists and those who love to sit by a window and enjoy the view.

Sleeping up to 10 people comfortably in 5 bedrooms, this beautiful period building has been completely transformed into one of the finest large holiday homes in the Yorkshire Dales. A real labour of love for the owners who, throughout two and a half years, have created something extraordinary at Bramble Bottom.

The quirky layout of the cottage is perfect for accommodating larger groups. On the second floor, you’ll find a fabulous open plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen. With its generous proportions, cathedral ceilings and beautiful views out across the River Swale it’s a wonderfully relaxing space. This floor is accessed via stairs from the ground level front door, or via the back door which is up the hill to the rear of the property and at the same level as the second floor.

There is a cosy wood-burner for those evenings sat by the fire with a glass of wine and for your entertainment a large LCD TV, DVD player and Wi-Fi are included. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to rustle up something special, and what better place to sit down and enjoy a meal together than around the elegant solid oak dining table. There’s also a wine chiller waiting to be filled. We love the little kitchen stools by the island – hand-crafted by one of the village locals they make the perfect spot to settle down with a glass of bubbly and have a chat with the cook.

For families, there is a full supply of children’s crockery and cutlery as well as toys, books and games to keep the kids happy. The owner can also provide travel cots, high-chairs and lots of other baby/toddler-friendly equipment including stair-gates and changing mats. Please note there is no washing machine at this cottage. However, you can, by appointment, use the laundry room at Swaledale House, which is 2.5 miles away.

The bedrooms are set downstairs on either side of the living space in what we like to call the East and West Wings. Each bedroom has been individually styled with a theme based around Swaledale. On the West Wing [first floor] we have the Waterfalls Room, a peaceful and calm oasis with its serene shades of blue and cream. On down to the ground floor and you’ll discover the fun Tour de France room with its iconic image of Muker on the big day, as featured in the broadsheets at the time. Both of these rooms boast their floor, have king-size beds and enjoy ensuites with walk-in showers and WCs.

Heading over to the East Wing and what we like to call the family suite. The first floor on this side houses two bedrooms and the family bathroom. The Meadow Room themed around Swaledale’s world-famous wildflower meadows, has a super-king zip & link bed which can also be set up as two singles if preferred. Next door is the Swaledale Sheep bedroom, which your kids will adore! This room is set as a twin room, but it can be a super-king if required. Both rooms share the family bathroom, which includes a bath (perfect for younger children) and a shower overhead.

Further down to the ground floor to find the Heather Room with its accents of purple and green. This room has a king-size bed and an en suite with a walk-in shower and WC. So five bedrooms and four bathrooms in total in Bramble Bottom so lots of options if you’re staying with a large group. And the beauty of it is you can all enjoy your own space in the house.

Outside this large luxury cottage in Swaledale, you will find the village and the River Swale immediately to the front. At the back of Bramble Bottom, there is a sheltered stone patio which looks out onto the village green. In the summer you can wander out the back door, throw a picnic blanket on here and settle down to enjoy the view. There is also a separate garage which can provide lockable storage for bicycles and anything else you don’t want to keep in the house.

Bramble Bottom welcomes up to 2 medium-sized dogs.

Local Area

We think Bramble Bottom has one of the best locations of any large luxury cottage in the Yorkshire Dales. Set in the heart of the much-loved village of Muker looking out onto the River Swale and the meadows of Swaledale beyond, the views from the cottage are truly breath-taking. Sit back and enjoy it from the window seats in the lounge and see what wildlife you can spot while you’re there.

What makes this such a unique location is that you are surrounded by breath-taking scenery on all sides and can be walking in the hills within minutes, yet you have the comfort of village life around you. Muker has a charming tea-room, a gorgeous little village store, the Swaledale Woollens shop, a Craft Shop / Art Gallery and a fantastic local pub, The Farmers Arms. With its open fire and excellent pub food, you’ll have to drag yourself away! Nearby Reeth is also one of the Dales most popular villages with lots of cafes, shops and even an ice-cream parlour for the kids. Hawes is the nearest town to Bramble Bottom and is an excellent option for a day out. You’ll find the Wensleydale Creamery here, home to the famous cheese, the Dales Countryside Museum & Ropemakers and lots more lovely shops, cafes and pubs.

Just beyond the village is the stunning countryside of Swaledale. The scenery all around is real picture-postcard stuff, with ancient old dry stone barns peppering the dramatic hills and valleys. May sees the annual Swaledale Festival, two weeks of fantastic music, art, walking and culture and the delightful Muker show in September is another calendar highlight.

This area of the Dales is also particularly renowned for its spectacular wildflower meadows in the Spring. People come from all over the world to see the fields come alive with every colour under the rainbow, a unique phenomenon because the local farmers don’t use chemicals in the areas. But every season has its charm, from the lush green summers to the dramatic and beautiful winters. And with no street light pollution for miles around the stars at night are dazzling.

It’s a trustworthy walker’s paradise here, and there are some beautiful walks literally from your doorstep. The circular walk from Muker over Kisdon Hill to Keld is featured as one of the Ramblers Top 50 walks in the UK, and the famous Coast to Coast route passes nearby.

And of course, this is a top cycling country, with the recent Tour De France passing right through the village. With lockable bike storage available, why not challenge yourself and some friends to take on the mighty Buttertubs Pass, just a few miles away.

We also recommend taking a tour of the Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Dales Trail, a circular route which takes you through some of the most dramatic scenery in the UK. This land of Viking place-names, waterfalls, rivers and ravines is like nowhere else on the planet – don’t forget to take the camera. And on the way back down you can stop for lunch at The Tan Hill (highest Pub in Great Britain) or head on round to the fantastic CB Inn – a real food lovers pub with amazing views.
