Gamekeeper Cottage, Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire Dales

Sleeps 4, Bedrooms 2, Bathrooms 1, Price From £495

At over 230 years old, The Gamekeeper is a cute character cottage nestling in the hills of Nidderdale. Set in an elevated position above the popular village of Pateley Bridge, its original features and contemporary comforts combine to create an elegant and unique country cottage. With the exception of the odd vocal pheasant, all around you is the peace and quiet of the Yorkshire countryside. Perfect for couples and small families, and just wait until you see the views from the garden!

Set over 3 floors, this romantic Yorkshire cottage has a magical appeal with its upside-down layout, thick stone walls, and quirky little touches. Step inside the porch and into a rustic contemporary kitchen complete with wood-paneled walls and heated original flagstone floors. Vintage green units and chunky wooden worktops combine to create a warm ambiance, and we love the old sewing machine providing a home to mood lighting in the corner. In the kitchen, you’ll find a washing machine and separate tumble dryer as well as heaps of storage under the stairs. There are a range cooker and large fridge-freezer too, with cupboards stocked with everything you need.

The lounge is on the first floor, a cute and relaxing room with lovely views out to the front of the cottage. There’s plenty of comfortable seating in here and the room has a pleasing Celtic-gatehouse vibe with tartan curtains and arched windows. There’s an LCD TV, DVD player & Wi-Fi for those chilled evenings in as well as lots of books to keep you entertained off-line. A warm living flame gas fire keeps everything nice and toasty.

Make your way up to the second floor to find the master bedroom. Set in the eaves of the house this charming room has bags of character. There’s a king-size bed to look forward to each evening and a curtained balcony giving the room a romantic appeal. Back down to the lounge and up another few steps to find the second bedroom. This room has a double-sized bunk bed so can comfortably sleep, 2 adults, and 2 children. There are handy little reading lights on the bottom & top bunk if you enjoy a good read in bed. The house bathroom sits next door to this room, a spacious and elegant room complete with a bath for those candlelit soaks and a shower handle for convenience. There’s also a traditional wooden toilet in here with a rather ingenious flushing mechanism…

The Gamekeeper looks out onto a babbling brook at its front and has private gardens to the rear of the cottage. Make your way up the garden steps to find a flat lawned area at the top, complete with a garden swing on a tree. With its elevated position, the views from this garden are just stunning. You’ll find a BBQ for guests use up here as well as picnic blankets to use in the cottage. We can’t think of a nicer spot for a long lazy lunch over a bottle or two.

As the cottage sits within a shooting estate the garden is often home to pheasant and partridge as well as other local wildlife. Wild deer are common here, hopefully, you’ll spot one during your stay…

The Gamekeeper sits next to another of our Gorgeous Yorkshire Cottages, The Lodge LHB. Both properties can be booked together to accommodate larger groups if required. Please note the steps in the garden are quite steep in parts and care should be taken walking up.

Local Area

The gamekeeper has an amazing location. Approached via a long and quiet bridleway, it offers the peace and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales countryside, with the delights of Yorkshire village life just two miles away. With miles of stunning walks and mountain bike trails literally from the doorstep, the cottage is heaven for lovers of all things outdoors. Heading to the cottage takes you higher up into the Nidderdale moorlands with some magnificent cross-country walking. If you prefer a gentler stroll, making your way back along with the bridle path also offers some fantastic panoramic views of Nidderdale and Pateley Bridge below.

Pateley Bridge itself is a charming little market town very typical of this area of Yorkshire. The Main Street is peppered with cafes, restaurants, local stores, and quality butchers – everything you need to stock up for your stay. You’ll also find the self-proclaimed ‘Oldest Sweet Shop in England’ here dating back to the early 1800s – little has changed inside since then.

Pateley Bridge sits at the heart of the breathtaking Nidderdale landscape, itself an AONB and immediately adjacent to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are bags of local attractions and stunning natural sights within easy driving distance and with Harrogate less than half an hour away, there’s lots of choice for day trips.

Nidderdale is perhaps the most luscious landscape in the Dales; with its lakes, ancient broadleaf woodlands, single arch barns, and the neat patchwork of stone edged fields that sit beneath open moorland stretching as far as the eye can see.

The Coldstone Cut is just a short walk away; a wonderful viewing point and art sculpture it affords the best vista of Nidderdale and the surrounding area. Across the dale, Brimham Rocks is an extensive enclave of bizarrely formed rocks that cast an interesting silhouette on the landscape and have been a favorite playground for generations of kids young and old.

Further up the dale, How Stean Gorge is a deep limestone ravine with the River Nidd at its base, crisscrossed by a vertiginous path and a number of dramatic pedestrian bridges. Stump Cross Caverns sits atop the hill between Nidderdale and Wharfedale, whose extensive passages, formed millions of years ago, featuring the remains of Wolverine and Bison.
