Dog Friendly The Old Nail Shed, North York Moors, Sawdon

Sleeps 2, Bedrooms 1, Bathrooms 1, Price From £595

The Old Nail Shed is a beautiful one-bedroom luxury cottage set in a pretty little village in the North York Moors. With its dramatic double height window, romantic mezzanine bedroom and stunning countryside views, it’s the perfect escape for couples looking for something special. And did we mention there’s an award-winning gastro-pub just a stone’s throw away…

As the name suggests, this historic stone barn was once where the local Blacksmith stored all of his nails and metal. Subject to a complete restoration it’s been completely transformed into a comfortable and luxurious holiday home.

The open plan living space gives the cottage a bright and contemporary feel, with lots of light streaming in through the gable high window. This also affords fantastic uninterrupted views of the rolling green countryside, even from the mezzanine level. The flooring downstairs is stylish black slate and underfloor heating keeps your toes toasty warm whatever the weather. In the lounge area, you’ll find a comfortable sofa to stretch out on, an LCD TV with Freeview, a DVD player and extensive DVD collection for those cosy movie nights. There’s also Wi-Fi provided if you want to connect online.

The ultra-modern contemporary kitchen is set to the rear of the cottage and features sleek walnut units, a touch control ceramic hob, fridge-freezer, microwave and Nespresso coffee maker. The cupboards are stocked with everything you need to rustle up a romantic dinner for two…

And so to bed; make your way up the bespoke wrought iron staircase to a gorgeous mezzanine bedroom boasting a king size bed and luxurious soft carpets. No need to rush, pop on your slippers and enjoy a lazy breakfast in bed up here.

The bathroom in this luxury cottage is also really rather special featuring top quality Roca fittings, a bateau bath and twinkling lights in the ceiling. Draw yourself a bath and enjoy a long hot soak under the stars each evening.

Outside the Old Nail Shed, there’s a charming and secluded stone patio, the perfect spot to throw open the double doors and settle down to lunch al fresco. The garden is west facing and a real sun-trap in the warmer weather. There is a pretty patio table and chairs and a BBQ provided too. The views are just lovely from here, and you have nothing to disturb you but the sound of birdsong overhead.

Local Area

The Old Nail Shed has an idyllic location. Set in the pretty North York Moors village of Sawdon you can strike out for a walk right from the doorstep. And if you don’t fancy cooking each evening mosey over to the excellent Anvil Inn, a fantastic gastro pub just a stone’s throw away…

The Old Nail Shed’s position means you are perfectly placed to take in the best of the North York Moors, Yorkshire Coast and York. Sitting at the eastern foot of the North York Moors the region’s dramatic landscape of heather and open moorland is just a short drive away. Somewhat smaller than the Yorkshire Dales, the North Yorkshire Moors still covers an area of almost 600 square miles and like the Dales, you can easily find yourself miles from anywhere relatively quickly. But there is something distinctly more civilised and less remote about the Moors. In place of harsh limestone and dramatic peaks, you’ll find gently rolling hills of heather, ancient woodland and lazy rivers winding through lush green valleys. There is a sense of wilderness, particularly on top of the high central moorlands, but its cast in comforting soft focus.

We recommend taking the road from Thornton-Le-Dale or Pickering north towards Whitby to experience it in all its grandeur. There are countless pretty villages and towns to explore in the area. The handsome market towns of Pickering and Helmsley are a must, as is the archetypical Moors village of Hutton-le-Hole.

The cottage is also very close to the coast. Much like its Cornish counterpart, the North Yorkshire coastline is a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, this is proper bucket & spade territory. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past, in fact, the coast’s villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tea rooms sitting alongside upmarket champagne and oyster bars.

This region is best known for the gorgeously gothic town of Whitby. Playing host at one time to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes amongst others, the town’s rich heritage is immediately obvious. Straddling the river Esk and dominated by the 13th Century ruins of St Hilda’s Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby’s crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries.

Although you could happily spend the weekend mooching about the independent shops, bars and cafes along Whitby’s bustling medieval streets, it’s well worth striking out to sample some of the other less known coastal villages nearby. Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay are all within ten minutes’ drive from the town, and each has their own unique charm.
