Rosella Cottage, North York Moors

Sleeps 2, Bedrooms 1, Bathrooms 1, Price from £345

Rosella Cottage is a compact but charming one-bedroom holiday cottage in the heart of Rosedale Abbey; an attractive little village at the geographical centre of the North York Moors. With its boutique-style bedroom, luxurious en-suite, and small but comfortable lounge; Rosella is the perfect romantic escape for active couples looking to escape to the country. And it’s all within easy walking distance of three excellent pubs, two cafes, and a gallery.

Dating back to 1850, Rosella Cottage has been completely refurbished throughout by the current owners, intent on creating a luxury hotel experience with all of the additional benefits of a small self-catering country kitchen. The ground floor accommodation consists of a charming space with local artist paintings on the walls. Include free Wi-Fi and an I-pod docking station. A variety of games, books and toys. There are also local maps for the walkers among you. This leads through to a compact cosy kitchen, dishwasher included.

The first floor of Rosella Cottage is taken up entirely by a beautiful double-height bedroom and spacious en-suite. It’s lovely and light, with two windows affording views to Hamer Moor across Rosedale Abbey. A king-size bed, a flat-screen TV and hotel-quality bed linen add a touch of indulgence. In the en suite, clean lines, a walk-in high-pressure shower and complimentary toiletries complete the luxury cottage feel. There is also a large cupboard upstairs with a clothes washer and dryer. Please note the stairs in Rosella Cottage are quite steep and are unsuitable for those with reduced mobility.

Outside, Rosella Cottage has a small Southeast-facing unfenced patio accessed via a right-of-way through a neighbours private garden (not for public use); and facing right onto the lovely medieval Churchyard of the old Priory grounds. There are also pretty views across Rosedale Abbey’s gorgeous village green and onto the Moors that surround the little village. From the green five country lanes head off to all points of the compass, taking you to beautiful locations across the North York Moors and beyond. See our location guide opposite for more information on the surrounding area.

Local Area

Rosella Cottage enjoys a great location in Rosedale Abbey, a picturesque North York Moors village. There are lovely village green and several cafes and pubs, all within a few hundred yards of the cottage. We are particularly fond of Graze on the Green where you can indulge in a giant home-made scone and cup of Yorkshire Tea whilst watching the comings and goings of Yorkshire village life. If you are partial to a spot of pub grub, the White Horse Farm Inn is also in the village and was voted Best Pub in Yorkshire in 2012.

Rosedale Abbey is famously at the centre of five converging lanes taking you off in different directions across the moors. The first takes you towards Blakey Ridge and then onwards to Castleton, Danby Dale and the other scenic villages of the Upper Esk Valley. The view from on top of Blakey Ridge, just a few minutes’ drives from Rosella Cottage, is, in our opinion the finest across the whole of the North York Moors.

The second lane takes you out of the village towards the Vale of Pickering and the market towns of Malton, Pickering and Helmsley; together with trips to Scarborough, Castle Howard or York a little further afield. The nostalgic North York Moors Railway [NYMR] starts in Pickering where you can catch a steam train to Whitby and back again through some of the most picturesque countrysides in Yorkshire. Helmsley features the nationally renowned Verbena Day Spa if you fancy a little pampering during your holiday.

The third takes you out across the moors to Egton Bridge and then on to Grosmont [also home to a stop on the NYMR] continuing onwards to Goathland, the location for “Aidensfield” in the “Heartbeat” television series. You can also visit the seaside delights of Staithes, Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay as well as the famous coastal town of Whitby. Fish & Chips at the Magpie Café a must while you’re here.

The fifth choice is to head out of Rosedale Abbey towards Farndale and Hutton-le-Hole, one of the prettiest villages in the North York Moors.
