About the location
Butley is a small village situated on the Suffolk Coast between Aldeburgh and Woodbridge. Sitting within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are lots of scenic and peaceful places to visit close by. There are numerous footpaths in the area, and these take in the varying countryside including Tunstall and Rendlesham Forests. Besides walking the country also provides an excellent opportunity for bird and wildlife watching. The walk from Snape Maltings to Iken along the Alde estuary is always beautiful but is particularly impressive if you happen to see a seal basking in the sun. Further up the coast RSPB, Minsmere is home to an extensive range of rare birds along with other wildlife.
There are several small villages in the area, including Snape and Orford which have some interesting places worth exploring. Snape is renowned for the Maltings which have been turned into a concert hall hosting a festival in June, the proms in August and several other concerts and exhibitions throughout the year. Orford is home to a large castle which dates from the 12th century and has spectacular views out over the River towards Orford Ness and further afield. While you are in Orford, try some of the beautiful fish available at Pinney’s or head to the Pump Street Bakery for a tasty treat.
