Dogs can get cracked pads on their feet, just like us! Since they don’t have the luxury of wearing shoes, sometimes cracks form. It is painful for our dogs, and if these become deeper or wider, then infection could set in too soon before you know it’s happening- let’s take care of them now so that doesn’t happen.

There are various reasons why dogs may develop cracked paw pads. As dog’s age, their paw pads experience wear and tear; exposure to harsh weather conditions such as snow or hot pavement can also contribute to this condition. Additionally, rough surfaces and chemicals in flooring can cause damage. If left untreated, this can cause significant discomfort for your furry friend.

By just looking at your dog’s paw pads, you can often see these tiny cracks start to appear. You can also feel the paws for cracks and roughness.

How To Check For Cracked Paw Pads

Have your dog’s paw examined to see any small cracks on the skin. If the skin is broken, check for signs of bleeding or infection. Look at their paws to see if they have any sores sticking out from the skin. Your dog may be showing symptoms of a limp when moving around or have trouble walking.

Do cracked paw pads hurt a dog?

Yes, cracked paw pads do feel very uncomfortable to a dog. Dogs have nerve endings in their paws, just like we do on our feet. So when the cracks start to appear, it is essential to use a cream for dogs before they worsen. If you don’t treat them with a suitable cream, the cracks can get infected and hurt your dog more than they already hurt.

How to prevent a dog’s paw pads from cracking?

If your dog already has cracked paw pads, you can use a paw balm, depending on its severity. If you think it’s infected, you must visit the vet. The best thing to do is always to use cracked paw cream to prevent any cracks in the first place. If any minor cracks appear, you can use an antiseptic cream for dogs to avoid infections, followed by the cracked paw cream.
