Dogs can get cracked pads on their feet just like us! Since they don’t have the luxury of wearing shoes, sometimes cracks form. It is painful for our dogs, and if these become deeper or wider, then infection could set in too soon before you know it’s happening- let’s take care of them now, so that doesn’t happen.

Dogs can develop cracked paws pads due to several things. Dogs experience wear and tear as they age in their paw pads, along with harsh weather conditions like snow or hot pavement. Rough surfaces and even chemicals in the flooring may cause this condition. If not correctly cared for, it can become excruciating for your dog.

By just looking at your dog’s paw pads, you can often see these tiny cracks start to appear. You can also feel the paws for cracks and roughness.

How To Check For Cracked Paw Pads

Have your dog’s paw examined to see if there are any small cracks on the skin. If the skin is broken, check for signs of bleeding or infection. Look at all of their paws to see if they have any sores sticking out from the skin. Your dog may be showing symptoms of a limp when moving around or have trouble walking.

Do cracked paws pads hurt a dog?

Yes, cracked paws pads do feel very uncomfortable to a dog. Dogs have nerve endings in their paws just like we do in our feet. So when the cracks start to appear, it is essential to use a cream for dogs before they get any worse. If you don’t treat them with the suitable cream, the cracks can get infected and hurt your dog more than they already are hurting.

How to prevent dogs paw pads from cracking? (Solution)

If your dog already has cracked paw pads, you can use a paw balm, depending on how severe it is. If you think it’s infected, then you will need to visit the vets. The best thing to do is always to use cracked paw cream to prevent any cracks in the first place. If any minor cracks appear, you can first use an antiseptic cream for dogs to avoid infections, followed by the cracked paw cream.

Types Of Balms For Dogs Paws

The below ingredients are safe for dogs and are non-toxic. You can also use these on their cracked noses.

However, if you’re planning on using a balm made for humans, be sure to check the label for any unwanted ingredients such as added essential oils or cocoa.

Argan Oil

Argan oil has the antioxidant y-tocopherol. It fights free radicals in your dog’s skin and makes it strong. Argan oil is a good moisturiser as well for your dog.

Beeswax

The wax in the balm is suitable for dogs. You can use it to cover large cracks or cuts on their paws. Beeswax has properties that help with skin irritation and healing.

Candelilla Wax

Candelilla wax creates a thick, even barrier over the skin that traps moisture and keeps your dogs paw skin hydrated.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is a plant-based oil that can help make your dogs paw healthy. It also has Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. If your dog’s paws are dry and cracked, hemp seed oil can help with this because it contains Zinc.

Sunflower Wax

Safe for dogs and can provide a sound barrier against weather conditions like heat, salt, and snow. Rich in Omega 3 and deep moisturising with repairing properties.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Virgin coconut oil is good for dogs. It can reduce skin irritation and improve hot spots. It is also moisturising and repairs dry, damaged skin.
